Happy Birthday Ms. Woolf

Elegant, wry, snobbish, smart and influential - It is my great regret that we never got to sit down together for a smoke and a ripping apart of the world. Here are a few thoughts and images that endure for us to ponder.

Virginia Woolf - January 25 1882

"No need to hurry. No need to sparkle. No need to be anybody but oneself".

"It is fatal to be a man or woman pure and simple: one must be a woman manly, or a                  man womanly."

Virginia by her sister Vanessa Bell

“I have lost friends, some by death...others by sheer inability to cross the street.”

Her writing desk

“Writing is like sex. First you do it for love, then you do it for your friends,                                 and then you do it for money.”

Vanessa Bell's book covers for the Hogarth Press

“Second hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.”

Virgina and Vanessa by Moi

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

  1. Is that a painting by toi? Or a print? It's beautiful, Hilary. I used to read Room of One's Own every year, but it's probably been a decade since I last opened it. I think I'm due for a rereading.

    1. It was a painting, now it's a print - yes by moi! It is a remarkable essay. The part about custard and prunes is especially good. It has come up in my mind several times during my reading of How to Be a Woman!

  2. I know! The prunes. They are the image that flashes first across my mind when I think of that book.

  4. With the PC being used for essentially more than figuring, you can find news sources setting up the power of this medium. You have certain totally operational blogs which give focused content. medios independientes
